FOCO ORCHESTRA
FOCO is an orchestra dedicated to free improvisation. It was founded in 1996 within MUSICALIBRE, Spanish Impovised Music Association. Since then the orchestra has played reguraly in the 13 editions of the International Festival Hurta Cordel, a part from other concert in different parts of Spain, becoming the most estable and regular orchestra of improvisation in Europe. The orchestra is made of around 30 musicians from different parts of Spain and with different musical backgrounds who also play forming different smaller ensembles .
During all these years dedicated to free improvised music in small ensemble as much as in the conducted form,MUSICALIBRE and FOCO have worked under the direction of some of the most important conducters of this type of music. Just to name some: Butch Morris, Wolfgang Fuchs, Peter Kowald, Dave Tucker, Steve Beresford, Roland Ramanan, Olivier Benoit, Walter Thomson, or Didrik Ingvaldsen. At the moment, its members, in a smaller format, have a regular series of concerts which takes place the first friday of each month in Los Jacintos (Madrid). Within these concerts the members of FOCO are themselves conducting the orchestra and continuing the exploration of this form of music together with the different formed groups.
In the last edition of the Festival Hurta Cordel, celebrated the last week of January 2009, FOCO was conducted by composer, improviser and conducter William Parker.
